Bourgee opened a year or so back with much pomp and ceremony, gaining several articles in the local press. The headlines trumpeted Michelin star food as Southend's only Steak and Lobster restaurant - and it certainly looks the part. I've only eaten at Bourgee once, shortly after it opened - so I can't give an entirely fair review, but my experience was pretty good. The main (steak), was everything it promised to be - succulent, well cooked, and expensive. My starters (usually the bit I get most excited about) were a little disappointing - I'd even go as far to say bland. I had a lobster lollipop affair, with some coconut glaze or sauce I think; I can't quite remember - and that sums it up for me. I remember thinking the steak was great - but the starter was a little dull. Still, I'd definitely go back to see how things have progressed. The décor is opulent, but tasteful - it feels impressive. You'd feel very out of place there if you strolled in with your kids in tow - but for an evening meal, or client entertainment it ticks the boxes. It's possibly out of place on the seafront in Southend, just a few hundred yards from slot machines and arcades - but I'm not going to moan about any restaurant that raises the general standard in Southend. Can't recommend really, as I've only eaten there once!
